Nacho-Average Comeback š®
A few years ago, Del Taco looked stable. Strong brand recognition. A loyal Southern California following. Hundreds of locations across the western U.S.
Then the slide started.
Same-store sales dropped. More and more locations closed. Marketing disappeared. The brand slowly lost its footing.
Last year the numbers told the story:
Same-store sales: -3.9%
Systemwide sales: -5.4%
Locations: 576 after 32 closures
For context, Jack in the Box bought Del Taco in 2022 for $585 million.
Last year they sold it for $115 million.
Ouch.
The Buyer
The buyer is Yadav Enterprises.
If youāre outside the restaurant industry, you probably havenāt heard of them. Inside the industry, theyāre a serious operator.
They run 300+ restaurants across brands like Jack in the Box, Dennyās, and TGI Fridays, and own entire chains like Taco Cabana and Nick the Greek.
Buying 576 locations for $115M works out to $200K per store.
Thatās an incredible price for a brand with deep penetration in California, Arizona, and Nevada.
But cheap doesnāt mean easy.
The Turnaround
Yadavās plan is called Project Sunrise ā an 18-month effort focused on:
⢠Improving food quality
⢠Simplifying the menu
⢠Rebuilding the loyalty program
⢠Bringing back classic menu items
Including the legendary burrito lineup that many Southern Californians grew up on.
Smart move.
Why It Matters
Restaurant turnarounds rarely happen overnight.
Del Taco still has something many brands would kill for: Great real estate.
Hundreds of legacy sites in strong western markets ā many with low occupancy costs.
If Yadav can stabilize operations and rebuild traffic, the infrastructure is in place.
For Those Watching
If the brand finds its footing again, brokers, developers, and investors should be paying attention.
When opportunities appearā¦the people who find them first win.
Thatās exactly why DealGround exists.
